Alternative Education Pathways

Timberlane Regional High School believes strongly that

  1. Every student has the right to a meaningful, valuable education, and

  2. Education cannot follow a one-size-fits-all model.

As a result of these beliefs, TRHS is dedicated to developing and strengthening our Alternative Education (Alt. Ed.) Pathways for students who do not perform as successfully in traditional classroom environments as others.

Below are four Alt. Ed. options TRHS students and their families can consider:

EXTENDED LEARNING OPPORTUNITY

Students earn credit toward a high school diploma by pursuing interests outside of the traditional classroom, on or off campus, with the mentorship of a teacher or community partner. ELOs can be in the form of an independent study, community service, job shadow, career exploration, internship, or apprenticeship.

EVENING DIVISION

Students attend TRHS classes during the evening from 4:00p - 7:00p Monday-Thursday throughout the school year. Half-credit classes run for 8 weeks; full-credit classes for 16 weeks. Students can take EveDiv classes to acquire credits to graduate early, to makeup credits they did not pass previously, to take classes of interest that do not fit into their day-school schedule, or, if they are at least 16 years of age, to attend full-time as a form of alternative education beyond traditional day school.

HiSET PREP

Students aged 16-18 attend self-paced classes during Evening Division hours in order to prepare to pass the High School Equivalency Test (HiSET) via five subtests: science, social studies, math, reading, and writing. Each content area has its own focused class once a week, with reading and writing combined in one Language Arts class. Passing the HiSET earns a student a High School Equivalency (HSE) certificate as opposed to a TRHS diploma.

CTE at SHS or PA

If they meet the requirements, TRHS students during the second half of their sophomore year can apply to enroll in a Career & Technical Education (CTE) class starting their junior year at either Salem High School or Pinkerton Academy. CTE courses account for two full credits and take place during the first two or last two blocks of the TRHS school day.
